Wedding industry Tweetup with the ‘Marry me Somerset’ girls

Working from home the life of an artist or Documentary Wedding Photographer can be quite isolating at times. Yes, we get wheeled out a couple of times a week for doing what we do best, documenting beautiful weddings, but the times apart from these instances we are largely working long hours at our computers editing and creating our finely crafted products.

So when we get a chance to step outside this zone, its a pleasure to meet with other like minded individuals that live a similar existence. So last week the provided yet another opportunity for a large scale meet up or shall I say ‘Tweetup’ with all manner of creative types associated with the wedding industry.

It was @marrymesomerset‘s first birthday celebration to boot with both Abi & Lisa being on fine form that evening. Greeting me and Jim ( J2 Photography ) at the front door to The Manor in Wellington, they welcomed us like two old friends and clearly stating, drinks to your left, canope’s care of le Frog and the Photo booth is a compulsory, get yourself in there and be part of the Birthday book. So thats how it went, we dutifully complied and this is the result, for no particular reason I found myself morphing into Elton John impersonating a chimp!

It was a lovely evening with some new friends being made amongst a beautiful backdrop, with fine wine, great food and the angelic voices of the Classical Songbirds.

Wedding Planning with Sarah & Ben’s camper van adventure to the Dorset Ghost Village of Tyneham

On arranging this Dorset wedding planning engagement shoot with Sarah & Ben, we were a little undecided as to the location to use. We had initially thought of Corfe Castle, but Sarah had thought that although scenic, it wasn’t a location that they visited and had no particular meaning to them. Well fair point I thought, thats what its meant to be about – using a location that you feel relaxed in or that ‘means’ something to you as a couple.

So Corfe was off, but we had a short list of locations to work from. Sarah had said that they were going to take out their camper van for a spin, so I flippantly suggested that we meet in the Durdle Door car park, that they could get the kettle on for a brew and we would discuss where we go from there. Well, little did I know that they would take me literally, for when I pulled up there the two of them were with cups of tea in hand! What a wonderful reception and a smashing cup of tea

After capturing the awaiting reception, with cups of tea in hand, we went for a spin in the Dorset countryside that led us to the village of Tyneham. Sarah & Ben had explained that the village had some derelict buildings that may prove interesting for photos. Upon arriving at the village’s approach road, the penny dropped, this was the village that I had heard a lot about. The story of this Ghost village is both intriguing and unique. The village and 7,500 acres of surrounding heathland and chalk downland around the Purbeck Hills, were commandeered just before Christmas 1943 by the then War Office (now MoD) for use as firing ranges for training troops. 252 people were displaced, the last person leaving a notice on the church door:

“Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly.”

This measure was supposed to be temporary for the duration of World War II, but in 1948 the Army placed a compulsory purchase order on the land and it has remained in use for military training ever since. Now visitors can access the village at weekends, walk across the many footpaths and explore the old School house and Church that are still standing and used as museums.

The village proved to be a fantastic success asa scene setter for our pictures. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed spending time with Sarah & Ben, talking more about their wedding preparations and how things were developing. Upon leaving the village we even had time to visit the wedding reception, a friends local farm where they will errect a marquee – it sounds like it will be a wonderful celebration that I very much look forward to. Sarah & Ben’s Tyneham village E-shoot – sneak peek

Last weekend I had the pleasure to meet up with Sarah & Ben who will be marrying mid summer at Kingston Maurward House, near Dorchester. We were still undecided on what location to use for the photo shoot, so I had challenged them to show me somewhere new and exciting. That they did, and they did it in style with us having a great couple of hours shooting in yet another glorious Dorset location.

Here’s a few images from the session for now, with a further set of cracking images to follow later in the week. Graced by some great weather, a new quirky location and a wonderful couple – it proved to be a memorable shoot for this Dorset Wedding Photographer.

Budmouth College students hold their first Prom Fair

Last week I was invited to take part in Budmouth College’s first Prom fair. Student committee members from year 11 along with teacher and learn for work co-ordinator Richard Osment decided to put on the show so Prom-goers could get the chance to see & experience the various luxury services available. Whether it be checking out the varous limousines, dresses, suits,beauty treatments or event photographers – they were all there, well represented.

I was there capturing the students strutting their stuff down the catwalk as the official Dorset Prom Photographer that evening, along with having a small studio setup to catch a few formal prom portraits that any parents may have been wanting as keepsakes.

The evening was a great success and very rewarding for the students involved with all the hard work that went into it. I believe Budmouth College hopes to make it an annual event and with such a cracking start I am sure it will develop and go from strength to strength.
